How to Really Get a Raise at Work

A boost in your pay would be nice, wouldn’t it? Part of building wealth is knowing your worth and asking for more. It can be difficult to talk about money and ask for a raise. If you’re ready to convince your boss you deserve a raise you’re going to need a few points to use for negotiating that increase in salary or pay.

If you’re feeling like it’s been a long time since you’ve had a raise and you want more money you need to stop and ask yourself a few questions first.

  1. Are you getting paid what you’re worth?
  2. When is the last time you sat down with your boss to review your salary?
  3. Have you been putting in more hours lately or has your role grown?
  4. Have you been killing it at work?
  5. Has it been a while since you’ve had a raise?
  6. Have you saved or made the company money?

Set Career Goals

Before you do anything you need to know what you want out of your career and where you see yourself going. Then see if you can sit down with your boss and set goals together. Where do you want to go and where does the company need you to go. Once your goals are set, map out a six or 12-month plan to help you get closer.

Be open to learn

Ask for more on the job or speciality training that will increase your performance.  Attend seminars, conferences and make it clear you want to be able to advance your skills as well as your salary. Ask where you can contribute to the company and develop in the coming year. Let them see you’re eager.

Know your worth

Put yourself in your boss’s shoes. What would you expect from you if you were in charge? Know what your worth by researching what other people in your role are making. Take into consideration their skill set, experience and education. Ask around and use online salary tools to help you get a better idea. Look at salary and cost of living.

Know your number when you walk in to have the conversation with your boss or at least have an idea of what you think you should be getting.

Up your game

Do more than your job description and increase your impact by going above and beyond. Don’t wait to be asked, take the initiative. Request to take a course that improves your skill level. Show your company that you’re a valuable asset they can’t easily replace. Go into work early, dress the part, take initiative and mentor others to show you’re worth.

Know how your role increases and impacts profit for the company.  Make the time and effort needed to understand the bigger picture.

Be pleasant to be around

Go into work with a smile on your face and a can-do attitude. Be professional, friendly and helpful. Avoid office gossip and/or oversharing about your personal life. Basically, keep it light.

Ask for it or speak up 

If you haven’t voiced your request for a raise let your boss know you’re ready for one. Make sure you tie your discussion to performance. Be able to back up your request by showing the wins/successes you’ve had over the past few months or year. If they can’t offer you a raise ask for a bonus or bonus based on performance i.e. meeting your goals. Make sure they see how your actions will help the bottom line.

Timing is everything here. If your boss has just let someone go or is in a bad mood, save the conversation for another day. Once you state your case, zip it.

Don’t threaten your boss, threaten to quit or try to manipulate them with other job offers. He/she might give you the raise but it’ll create bad blood between the two of you.

If they say no, ask if there is a time in the future you can come back to review a possible increase. Suggest 6 months and lock in a time frame if you can.
